Emergency services were called after reports of a man entering the tiger enclosure at a UK wildlife park. He later died from his injuries, police confirm.

A man has died after entering the tiger enclosure at a wildlife park in Yorkshire, police have confirmed. Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of an intruder in the big-cat area. Despite attempts to save him, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Park closed pending investigation

The wildlife park was evacuated and closed while police and health and safety inspectors secured the area. The tigers involved were contained by keepers using standard emergency protocols, and no other injuries were reported. The park’s management issued a brief statement expressing shock and confirming full cooperation with the police investigation.

Yorkshire Police have launched a major incident inquiry to establish how the man gained access to the enclosure and whether anyone else was involved. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from around the park and will take statements from staff who were on duty at the time. The force has not released the man’s identity pending formal identification and notification of family.

Safety record of UK wildlife parks

Incidents of this kind are extremely rare in Britain, where wildlife parks operate under strict licensing conditions enforced by the local authority and, where dangerous wild animals are kept, under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act. Fatalities involving big cats have not occurred at a licensed UK park for many years, a fact that will make the investigation even more sensitive.

The incident is likely to prompt a review of perimeter security and visitor access rules at animal attractions across the country. Health and safety lawyers say the key question will be whether the park took all reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised entry, a test that could expose gaps in existing risk assessments.

Why it matters

This tragedy raises immediate questions about physical security at sites housing dangerous animals, but it also carries an emotional toll on park staff and visitors who witnessed the event. A robust investigation must balance respect for the deceased with the need to prevent any repetition.

What happens next

A full inquest will be opened once the post-mortem is complete. The Health and Safety Executive may join the police inquiry if there is evidence of a systemic safety failure. The park is unlikely to reopen until both the police and licensing authority are satisfied that enclosures and public areas meet every required standard.

A man has been arrested after an 11-year-old boy was injured when three dogs were allegedly 'out of control' in the Newton Heath area of Manchester, police say.

Police have arrested a man after an 11-year-old boy was injured in an incident involving three allegedly out-of-control dogs in Newton Heath, Manchester. The boy received medical treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to Greater Manchester Police.

Dogs seized under Dangerous Dogs Act

The three dogs involved were seized by officers and are being held under the Dangerous Dogs Act while enquiries continue. That legislation covers breeds banned in the UK as well as any dog that is dangerously out of control in a public place. Police have not named the breed of the animals, but witnesses described large dogs running loose near a residential street shortly before the incident.

Neighbours in Newton Heath said the area has seen an increase in dog-related complaints in recent months, a pattern reflected in force-level data across Greater Manchester. Dog control officers are already stretched, and the RSPCA has warned that illegal breeding and the trade in banned breeds are rising in northern cities.

Broader context for dog safety

The incident comes weeks after the government signalled it would review dangerous dogs legislation, with particular attention to how local authorities can seize animals before a serious incident occurs. Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s office has not commented directly on the Newton Heath case, but ministers are aware that public concern about out-of-control dogs crosses party lines and regularly features in constituency postbags.

The man arrested remains in custody for questioning. Charges could include possessing a banned dog, allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control, and — depending on the boy’s injuries — more serious offences under the Offences Against the Person Act.

Why it matters

Dog attacks on children are relatively rare but provoke intense local concern and demand swift action. If the dogs in this case turn out to be banned breeds or previously known to authorities, questions will follow about why they were not removed earlier.

What happens next

The suspect will be interviewed and may be charged within days. The boy’s family will be kept informed as the investigation develops, and local neighbourhood policing teams are likely to increase patrols in Newton Heath while the case is active.

Greater Manchester Police have arrested eight men shortly after their release from jail, with some held for breaching criminal behaviour orders and others for robbery or domestic violence offences.

Greater Manchester Police have arrested eight men within days of their release from custody, reigniting debate over how the justice system manages offenders returning to the streets. Some of the men are held for breaching criminal behaviour orders, while others face fresh allegations of robbery and domestic violence, police say.

Pattern of reoffending emerges

The arrests span multiple offences but share a common thread: each man had been released from jail shortly before being detained again. GMP has not disclosed exact timing between release and re-arrest, but sources close to the investigation describe the pattern as unusually concentrated. Officers suggest the clustering of cases points to a small cohort of individuals cycling in and out of custody rather than a broader trend across Greater Manchester.

The revelations arrive at a moment when the government is under pressure to demonstrate that early release schemes — introduced to ease prison overcrowding — do not leave communities exposed. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has repeatedly warned that any relaxation of containment must be matched by robust probation support, a message his policing ministers are now echoing in private briefings.

What the authorities say

A GMP spokesperson confirmed the arrests but declined to comment on individual cases, citing ongoing investigations. The force stressed that breaches of criminal behaviour orders are treated seriously because those orders are designed to protect victims and the public. Robbery and domestic violence allegations are being pursued through separate teams, with detectives reviewing CCTV and witness statements.

The Ministry of Justice declined to discuss whether the men were released under the statutory early release scheme or via standard licence conditions. Campaigners for victims’ rights argue that the distinction matters little to communities that feel the impact of repeated reoffending within days of someone leaving prison.

Why it matters

This case puts a human face on a national debate. Probation services in Greater Manchester are already stretched, and the government’s plan to build new prisons will take years to deliver. If a handful of high-risk individuals are released without adequate monitoring, public confidence in both policing and sentencing policy erodes quickly.

What happens next

The men will appear before magistrates in coming days. GMP is expected to use the cases to argue for tighter licence conditions and better inter-agency data sharing between prisons, probation, and police. Ministers will be watching closely; any further reoffending while on licence could accelerate policy changes that affect thousands of prisoners due for release in the next year.

The girl's body was discovered after she was reported missing on Sunday, says West Mercia Police.

Police are treating the death of an 11-year-old girl whose body was found in a Worcestershire park as unexplained, after she was reported missing at about 23:20 on Sunday night. Detectives found her in a park near the cricket ground at Elmley Castle, close to Evesham, and say inquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing.

West Mercia Police said the girl was reported missing late on Sunday evening and was later located in the park beside the cricket ground. A spokesperson confirmed inquiries were under way into the circumstances surrounding her death, and that the case is being treated as unexplained.

Nearby residents were told by the force that there would be an increased police presence in the area while detectives carry out their work. The girl’s family is being supported by specially trained officers.

A close-knit village

Elmley Castle is a small village roughly four miles from Pershore, with a population of about 500 according to the parish council. The castle that gives the village its name dates back to the 11th Century and sits on the sides of nearby Bredon Hill. The scene of the death is a park close to the cricket ground, in an area more accustomed to summer fixtures than a major police investigation.

District councillor Beverley Hardman said local reaction was one of complete shock. She said people in Elmley Castle do things for the community and that it is a very proud area where residents get on with people and work together. She said the background to the case was not yet known, but that whatever the cause, it would not take the pain away for the family.

Why it matters

Cases involving children are always treated as a distinct category of serious criminal investigation, and an unexplained death always prompts scrutiny of the response as well as the circumstances. Police have not said whether there are any arrests, and the family’s support arrangements are already in place. The increased presence in a village of around 500 residents means a significant policing operation is under way in a close community.

What happens next

West Mercia Police will continue inquiries and will keep the public updated as the investigation progresses. Officers remain at the scene and residents can expect a continued police presence. Anyone with information is asked to contact the force. The family is being supported by specially trained officers while the case remains open.

This article will be updated as further information becomes available.

A London court is likely to hold a private hearing on Thursday as Mountbatten-Windsor challenges Thames Valley Police over searches of his former homes.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has launched a High Court bid to quash the search warrants police used to raid two of his former homes on royal estates, in a case that pits one of the country’s most scrutinised men against the officers who arrested him. The judiciary confirmed on Monday that a London court is likely to hold a private hearing on Thursday, with the dispute focused on warrants issued by a judge at the Central Criminal Court on 18 February.

The application, brought by the former prince, seeks judicial review of those warrants, meaning he is asking the High Court to examine the lawfulness of the authorisations on a formal, higher-stage footing rather than simply disputing them at the outset of a police search. The same Thursday hearing will also deal with a request from Thames Valley Police to restrict access to the court documents in the case.

Officers searched his home on the remote Sandringham estate in eastern England and his former Royal Lodge residence in Windsor, west of London. Mountbatten-Windsor, 66, was arrested on 19 February on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, having been released later the same day. He remains under investigation and has denied wrongdoing. He was stripped of his royal titles last year following his connections to Jeffrey Epstein, who died in a prison in New York in August 2019.

What the hearing will cover

Two distinct strands will be in front of the judge. The first is Mountbatten-Windsor’s own application to have the February warrants quashed. The second is a police request to limit public access to the paperwork, which the judiciary press office confirmed will be dealt with at the same private hearing.

Thames Valley Police said in a statement that while its misconduct in a public office investigation continues, the force is engaged in legal proceedings over warrants previously obtained, and that it would be inappropriate to comment further while those proceedings are ongoing.

Why it matters

A successful quashing order would not end the police investigation, but it would strip away an early legal foundation of it and raise serious questions about how the original authorisations were sought and granted. Judicial review of search warrants issued by a Crown Court judge is a rare step, and one that tends to draw scrutiny well beyond the individual case. For a man who has spent two years moving from public collapse to formal legal proceedings, the outcome will be the first substantive judicial ruling on the search of his homes.

What happens next

The private hearing is listed for Thursday in London. Any ruling on quashing the warrants is likely to be the first firm outcome in the legal challenge. The underlying investigation into alleged misconduct in a public office continues in parallel, and Mountbatten-Windsor remains under investigation and denies wrongdoing.

Reporting on this case is being updated as the hearing approaches, with Al Jazeera and other outlets following the outcome at the Central Criminal Court and the High Court.

A 40-year-old man was shot dead at a memorial service in East Acton with up to 50 people present, the Met says.

A man has been shot dead at a memorial service in west London where dozens of people, including children, had gathered to remember somebody else. The Metropolitan Police were called to the junction of Braybrook Street and Erconwald Street in East Acton at 19:47 GMT on Friday night after members of the public reported hearing multiple shots.

Officers arrived alongside the London Ambulance Service, but the 40-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of medics. A murder investigation is now under way and a police cordon remains in place across Braybrook Street.

A memorial service turned to chaos

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who is leading the investigation, said between 40 and 50 people were present, including children, when the shooting occurred. Police said the man died in what they described as a senseless act of violence.

Mr Howie said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of a man whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence. We understand a large number of people had gathered for a memorial service and what should have been a time to come together in remembrance has instead left a family devastated. We believe between 40 and 50 people, including children, were present when this incident occurred. Someone knows what happened and we need them to come forward.”

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled to formally establish the cause of death, though police believe the victim sustained a gunshot wound. The victim’s family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

Police appeal for witnesses

Police are asking anyone who was around Erconwald Street, Braybrook Street, the surrounding roads or the Wormwood Scrubs playground between 18:00 and 20:00 to think carefully about what they saw. Officers are particularly interested in anyone carrying or concealing weapons, people on bicycles acting suspiciously, or vehicles being driven at speed.

The Met is also seeking photographs, video, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage, as well as anything posted on social media that might be relevant. No arrests have been made.

Why it matters

A shooting in front of a large crowd, with children present, is the kind of incident that raises immediate public anxiety well beyond the immediate area. East Acton and the wider Acton area have seen repeated concerns about street crime and gang-related violence, and an incident of this kind puts pressure on both the police and local authorities to explain what safeguards exist around large gatherings in public spaces.

It also matters because witnesses are the single most likely route to a conviction. Police appeals of this kind usually depend on residents with doorbell cameras and phone footage coming forward within the first 24 to 48 hours, before images circulate widely and attention moves elsewhere.

What happens next

The immediate priority is identifying those present and recovering any footage from the surrounding streets. Detectives will continue canvassing the area and will likely hold a further appeal for information as the post-mortem results come in. No arrests have been made at this stage, and the Metropolitan Police have asked anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Masked men held a seven-months-pregnant woman down with a pillow over her face while demanding a six-figure crypto transfer, in an attack police say was captured on CCTV.

A businessman from Solihull has described being beaten with hammers by masked intruders who held his seven-months-pregnant wife down with a pillow over her face and demanded hundreds of thousands of pounds in cryptocurrency. The attack, which took place in December last year, lasted around 45 minutes and left the victim with serious head, hand and rib injuries. Crimestoppers is now offering a £10,000 reward for information, with the police working from home security footage.

What happened in the house

The man, whom the BBC calls James, said three men forced their way into the family home before launching the assault. He tried to fight them off but was struck in the face, head and ribs. His wife was pinned to the sofa, screaming that she could not breathe. The couple said they had no idea what the men wanted until one demanded James unlock his phone and hand it over.

The attackers appeared to know he owned cryptocurrency but had little idea how to reach it. Instead they took instructions from someone else on a live video call, James said. He described hearing the voice on FaceTime directing them: show me everything on his phone, show me what apps he’s got. Once the caller identified a wallet holding substantial funds, the threats escalated, with a promise to stab his wife in the stomach and kill the baby if the money was not sent immediately.

A ‘wrench attack’ pattern

Security researchers describe this as a wrench attack, so called because the coercion is physical rather than technical. It is a growing category of theft aimed at crypto holders, with reports of similar cases in the UK, France and the United States as coin prices have risen. The victims’ own assessment is that their value was understood by the criminals even though the mechanics of accessing digital assets were not.

The recovery problem

Recovering funds once they have been transferred is notoriously difficult, and James said he has little hope of doing so. His priority is different: seeing those responsible brought before the courts, and making sure his experience is understood as a warning rather than treated as an unlucky piece of bad luck. The BBC reports that his wife, in her early thirties and expecting her third child, feared she might lose the baby because of the stress. The baby survived and was born at full term.

Why it matters

This is not a cyber attack in the technical sense. Nothing was hacked, no credentials were stolen and no software was exploited. The attackers used a physical address, a video call and brute violence to force a transfer, which makes the exposure a matter of whether someone is known to hold crypto, something that is increasingly easy to establish. As high-value balances become a more visible part of personal wealth in Britain, the home is now part of the attack surface.

What happens next

Police are appealing for information, with a £10,000 Crimestoppers reward and CCTV footage from the property and surrounding streets. Anyone recognising the getaway vehicle or the men in the footage can contact the force or Crimestoppers anonymously. Expect this case to be cited by campaigners and, potentially, by the government as evidence for tighter rules on how crypto accounts are held and moved, at a time when the sector is already under scrutiny over how the assets are advertised and accessed.

Leicestershire Police say they are 'extremely concerned' for the welfare of Charlie Ryan, 31, who was last seen on Friday morning.

Police have appealed for help to find a heavily pregnant woman who has been missing since Friday morning. Leicestershire Police said Charlie Ryan, 31, was last seen in the Groby Road area of Leicester near to the New Parks Way roundabout.

The force said officers are “extremely concerned” for her welfare and that active inquiries are continuing. Police said inquiries carried out so far have indicated she may be in the Northfields area of Leicester.

What police are asking people to look out for

Anyone who may have seen Charlie Ryan or knows where she may be is being asked to contact police. The woman is described as white, 165cm (5ft 5in), with bright blonde hair.

She was last seen wearing a black jacket, a grey jumper, black leggings and black shoes. Those specific details are the sort police rely on when asking the public to check CCTV footage, doorbell cameras and dashcam recordings along the likely route between the two areas identified.

Why it matters

Missing person appeals for heavily pregnant women are treated as a high-priority category across UK policing, because of the health risks to both the woman and the baby as time passes. Police forces routinely use appeals to national and regional media in these cases, and members of the public are often the ones who spot the person on doorbell footage.

The appeal also serves a practical purpose for anyone who sees Charlie Ryan: contacting police directly rather than approaching her, so that officers can verify her wellbeing and location without causing alarm.

What happens next

Leicestershire Police have asked anyone with information to contact the force, and the search is ongoing. Officers will continue to review CCTV and other footage from the Groby Road and Northfields areas as part of active inquiries.

If you see Charlie Ryan, or anyone who knows her current whereabouts, the force has asked that you get in touch promptly rather than waiting. The appeal remains open and the concern about her welfare is described as immediate.

A 40-year-old man was shot dead in front of up to 50 people, including children, at a memorial gathering in west London.

A man has been shot dead in East Acton, west London, in what the Metropolitan Police has described as a “senseless act of violence” that unfolded while dozens of people were gathered for a memorial service. Police were called to the junction of Braybrook Street and Erconwald Street at 19:47 GMT on Friday after members of the public reported hearing multiple shots.

Officers arrived alongside the London Ambulance Service, but the man, aged 40, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of medics. He is believed to have sustained a gunshot wound, though a post-mortem examination has been scheduled to formally establish the cause of death.

What the police have said

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie is leading the investigation. He said officers believe between 40 and 50 people, including children, were present when the shooting occurred, and that someone present knows what happened.

The appeal covers a wide area and a two-hour window. Anyone who was around Erconwald Street, Braybrook Street, the surrounding roads or the Wormwood Scrubs playground between 18:00 and 20:00 is being asked to think carefully about what they saw, specifically anyone carrying or concealing weapons, people on bicycles acting suspiciously, or vehicles being driven at speed.

Police are also keen to hear from anyone with photographs, video, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage, or who has seen anything relevant on social media. No arrests have been made and a cordon remains in place on Braybrook Street.

A tragedy in the middle of a gathering

What makes this case stand out is the setting. A memorial service is meant to be an occasion for gathering and remembrance, and instead it turned into a scene of violence and grief. The Met said the victim’s family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Why it matters

Cases involving multiple shooters or shots fired in public remain a persistent concern for UK policing, particularly as the festive period approaches. The Met has increased deployments across London in response to a number of high-profile fatal shootings in crowded public places, and this incident puts fresh pressure on that response.

For residents of East Acton, the shooting also raises immediate questions about what security measures will surround the memorial gathering the family had originally planned, and for how long the cordon on Braybrook Street remains in force.

What happens next

The murder investigation continues and police have appealed directly to witnesses. Detectives will work through any dashcam and doorbell footage submitted from the surrounding streets, which police often describe as decisive in the early stages of a shooting inquiry.

The post-mortem will confirm the cause of death. Police have not named any further lines of enquiry, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Met. The public is also urged to call the Crimestoppers charity line anonymously if they have information that would assist the inquiry.

Counter-terror police charge a Widdecombe suspect with a planned terrorist act against Nigel Farage.

A suspect detained in the investigation into deaths in Widdecombe has been charged with planning a terrorist act against Nigel Farage, according to the BBC. Counter-terrorism police said the further charge follows a hugely intensive and complex investigation, and it represents a significant escalation in a case that has run for several months and drawn sustained public attention across the country.

The charge relates to alleged preparation rather than any completed attack. Under UK law, offences covering acts preparatory to terrorism are designed to allow police to intervene at the point where a plot becomes operational, before harm occurs. Sitting alongside existing charges, the allegation signals that investigators believe there was an intention aimed at a named individual rather than a general grievance without a target.

A long-running investigation

The case dates back to the deaths in Widdecombe, a small Devon town, which prompted a major police response. Counter-terrorism officers have described the subsequent inquiry as unusually demanding, and any additional charge in a matter of that length is a signal of sustained investigative work rather than a quick response.

Investigations of this scale place considerable strain on local policing and on the families of those who died. They also require careful evidence handling, particularly where digital material and online communications are involved, and any prosecution will have to be built to withstand detailed scrutiny in court.

Why the Farage allegation matters

Named targets in terrorism cases are relatively rare in UK charging practice, and the specificity tends to draw disproportionate attention. A charge that names a senior political figure suggests to prosecutors and to the public that the threat was considered credible and directed, and it guarantees sustained coverage of any future hearing.

It also raises wider questions about political violence and the security arrangements around public figures. Demonstrations and public appearances in Britain are attended by a small number of specialist officers, and those arrangements are periodically reviewed in light of known threats.

Why it matters

The allegation is significant on two fronts. It advances a serious criminal case, and it shows that investigators are prepared to treat threats against elected politicians as terrorism rather than as ordinary threatening behaviour. For Mr Farage, a named allegation carries obvious personal weight, whatever the eventual outcome.

For the public, the case is a reminder that threats against political figures sit at the intersection of criminal law, security policy and political culture. Britain has seen sustained debate in recent years about the tone of political disagreement, and charging decisions in cases of this kind inevitably send messages beyond the courtroom.

What happens next

The suspect will appear before magistrates’ court at a hearing listed by the court, where the charge will be put formally and a decision taken on remand or bail. A committal hearing will follow before any trial. Counter-terrorism police have not published further detail, and they frequently refrain from commenting on outstanding cases while an investigation is live. If the charge is contested at a preliminary hearing, the court timetable will set out how quickly the case moves to crown court.
