Best known for The Last Emperor and Sexy Beast, the British film-maker was celebrated for working with international directors throughout his decades-long career.

Jeremy Thomas, the Oscar-winning British film producer behind The Last Emperor and Sexy Beast, has died at the age of 77, prompting tributes from directors, actors and colleagues across the film industry.

A Producer of International Reach

Thomas was best known for producing Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, which won nine Academy Awards in 1988, and for the British crime film Sexy Beast, a cult favourite starring Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley. Across a career spanning several decades, he built a reputation for working with international directors and for backing films that combined artistic ambition with commercial appeal.

The Last Emperor was a landmark co-production, chronicling the life of China’s last imperial ruler with a scale and cinematography that were unusual for its time. It remains one of the most decorated films in Oscar history. Sexy Beast, by contrast, was a smaller but sharp-edged British crime drama that has endured in popular culture in a way that few mid-budget British films do.

Thomas’s career also encompassed work with directors from different countries and traditions, reflecting an industry figure who moved between Hollywood, European cinema and British independent film. That breadth was one of the qualities most frequently noted in early tributes.

Why It Matters

Producers often sit behind the scenes in public memory, but Thomas was a significant figure in a profession that shapes what films get made and how they are financed. The Last Emperor, in particular, showed that a British-based producer could help deliver a film with international prestige and Oscar success. For the UK film industry, that kind of cross-border work has historically been an important showcase.

His death is also a reminder of the generation of producers who came up through the more eclectic, auteur-friendly corners of British and international cinema. While box-office hits and franchises dominate much of the modern conversation, Thomas’s filmography included titles that have lasted because of their style, taste and casting rather than their commercial scale alone.

What Happens Next

Tributes are expected to continue from colleagues in the British and international film world, including directors and actors who worked with him directly. The Academy Awards and BAFTA communities may choose to mark the death formally, as they often do for figures with multiple Oscar wins or nominations.

For cinemas and home entertainment platforms, existing Thomas-produced films are unlikely to change in the short term, but re-releases, special screenings and renewed attention to titles such as The Last Emperor and Sexy Beast are common in the weeks after a prominent figure’s death. His body of work will remain a reference point for producers working across British and international cinema.

The longest-serving Woman's Hour presenter died aged 75, eight days after a north London collision in which she was dazzled by headlights.

An inquest in London has heard that Dame Jenni Murray, the broadcaster who defined BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour for a generation of British listeners, died eight days after a car crash in which she was dazzled by vehicle headlights. The longest-serving presenter of the programme was 75 when she died on 12 March, following a collision in north London.

The collision

North London area coroner Tony Murphy was told the crash took place near Hampstead Heath at around 19:45 GMT. A statement from Dr Clare Morkane, a consultant at the Royal Free Hospital where Dame Jenni was admitted on 4 March, said she had been driving when she became dazzled by vehicle lights and collided with two stationary vehicles. Following the collision she was unable to recall events, exited the vehicle independently and was taken to hospital. The impact caused multiple rib fractures, a fracture to the upper sternum and a collapsed lung. She was initially placed on non-invasive ventilation before being moved to intensive care, where she developed bronchopneumonia. The coroner ruled her cause of death was bronchopneumonia caused by fractures to her rib and sternum sustained in the crash. The Metropolitan Police investigated but closed its inquiry with no further action.

A broadcasting career

Dame Jenni joined Woman’s Hour in 1987 and left in 2020. Across more than three decades she conducted some of the most memorable interviews in British broadcasting, from a confrontation with Baroness Margaret Thatcher over childcare policy to a flirtatious exchange with actor Jack Nicholson and probing conversations with Edwina Currie and Hillary Clinton. She spoke openly with listeners about her breast cancer diagnosis in 2006, her weight loss surgery and the menopause, and in 2011 received a damehood for her contribution to broadcasting. She also won two Sony Awards and was inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame. After her death, then-BBC director general Tim Davie called her “a broadcasting icon”, while Radio 4 controller Mohit Bakaya described her as “warm, fearless and beloved by listeners”.

Why it matters

Dame Jenni Murray shaped the national conversation on gender, health and politics for more than 30 years, and her death marks the loss of one of the most significant figures in British audio. The inquest’s findings give the public a clearer account of the circumstances of her passing and close a chapter that many listeners had followed since her final sign-off.

What happens next

The inquest has recorded its conclusions, and with the police investigation already closed no further proceedings are expected. Attention now turns to the tributes and reassessment of her legacy across BBC Radio and British culture more broadly.

European Cup winner and former Aston Villa and Manchester United goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer dies at the age of 78.

Jimmy Rimmer, the goalkeeper who wrote his name into English football history by winning the European Cup with Aston Villa and collecting honours at Manchester United, has died at the age of 78.

A goalkeeper who made history

Rimmer was a dependable presence between the posts during a golden era for British football. He became the first Englishman to win the European Cup with two different clubs, a feat that underlines both his longevity and his standing among the game’s elite. Supporters remember a shot-stopper who combined calm distribution with the kind of bravery that defines the position.

From Old Trafford to Villa Park

Rimmer began his professional journey at Manchester United, where he learned his craft behind a formidable side and lifted the trophy that confirmed the club’s continental ambitions. He later moved to Aston Villa, and it was in claret and blue that he reached the summit of European football, helping Villa claim the continent’s premier prize in 1982. Few players can say they stood on the biggest stage for more than one famous club.

A quiet professional

Teammates describe a player who asked for little attention and gave everything on match days. In an era before the relentless spotlight of social media, Rimmer let his performances speak, building a reputation as a reliable last line of defence during high-pressure campaigns.

Tributes pour in

News of his death prompted an outpouring from both ends of the football world. Former players, current managers and fans took to social platforms to celebrate a man who embodied the spirit of the English game. Manchester United and Aston Villa each paid tribute, noting his unique place in their shared European history and the warmth he brought to dressing rooms across the country.

Legacy in English football

Rimmer’s career spanned a period when British clubs reasserted themselves in Europe, and his name sits alongside the greats who carried that ambition. For a generation of supporters, he represents a link between the domestic game and its continental pinnacle. His death closes a chapter of football history, but the record books will long note the keeper who won Europe’s top prize with two English clubs.

As the game mourns, the focus turns to celebrating a life spent at the heart of the sport. Rimmer’s story is a reminder that greatness is not always loud — sometimes it is the steady hand that keeps the net undisturbed when everything is on the line.
