‘Dangerously hostile’: heatwaves leave hospital wards unsafe, data reveals

Hospital wards in England have reached almost 42C during this summer’s heatwaves, forcing cancellations of surgery and exposing wards deemed “dangerously hostile” to patients and staff alike.

The Data Behind the Heat

Figures disclosed by 33 NHS trusts show ward temperatures during July repeatedly breached the 28C limit set by NHS England. The Northern Care Alliance, which runs four hospitals in Greater Manchester, recorded a blistering 41.8C — around 14C above the recommended safe maximum.

Surgery Cancelled as Cooling Failed

In several trusts, operating theatres lost cooling as units buckled under the heat, forcing operations to be postponed. Some patients, unwilling to travel in the swelter, cancelled their own procedures, adding to a backlog the health service can ill afford.

An NHS Unprepared for Extreme Heat

The revelations land as climate scientists warn that heatwaves once considered exceptional are becoming routine. Yet many British hospitals were built for a cooler climate, with little resilience to sustained high temperatures — a vulnerability now laid bare ward by ward.

Patients and Staff at Risk

Excessive heat endangers the elderly, the very young and those with underlying conditions, while exhausting the clinicians trying to care for them. “Dangerously hostile” is not hyperbole when a recovery room becomes a hazard in its own right.

What Must Change in UK Hospitals

Experts argue for retrofitting estates with effective ventilation, shaded windows and reliable cooling in clinical areas — funded as climate adaptation rather than discretionary upgrade. Without it, the NHS risks treating the symptoms of a warming country with buildings that cannot cope.

For now, the 41.8C reading stands as a warning: the health impacts of extreme heat are already inside British hospitals, and the coming summers will test them further.
