North Korea fires ballistic missile towards the sea, South Korea says

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile towards the sea off its east coast, South Korea’s military said on Saturday. The Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that the missile was launched from the port city of Wonsan, on the eastern shore of the Korean peninsula, and flew more than 700 kilometres.

A launch that rattled three capitals

Seoul moved quickly in response. The Joint Chiefs of Staff raised an alert for further launches and said it would share intelligence with the United States and Japan. The presidential national security office convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation, according to a statement from the president’s office.

Japan issued an emergency alert of its own, saying: “North Korea has launched a suspected ballistic missile.” US Pacific Command said it was aware of the launch and was consulting closely with allies and partners, adding that “based on current assessments, this event does not pose an immediate threat to US personnel or territory, or to our allies.”

Coming amid a dispute over the border

The launch came a day after Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed South Korean demands for an apology over landmine blasts inside the Military Demarcation Line. South Korea and the US-led United Nations Command say the mines were planted by the North; Pyongyang has denied it and says it is trying to plant them in its own territory. Seoul has also called on the North to halt fortification work along the border, including mines and anti-tank barriers.

The blasts seriously injured three South Korean soldiers on a reconnaissance mission inside the four-kilometre-wide border zone. Kim Yo Jong rejected Seoul’s demands as “utterly pathetic”, saying the North intends to permanently sever ties with the South.

Why it matters

For UK readers, this is part of a wider pattern of regional military activity that shapes alliance decisions in Washington and Tokyo — and, through those, the security calculations that reach Europe. Wonsan is a significant naval and missile base, and launches from there tend to be taken more seriously in Seoul than routine tests fired from the usual western test grounds.

The sequencing is notable too. A missile flight arriving immediately after a public spat over the border, and after Pyongyang publicly hinting at a permanent rupture with the South, reads as deliberate signalling during an already tense period rather than routine activity.

What happens next

The immediate question is whether further launches follow. South Korea has signalled it remains on alert and has shared early warning data with Washington and Tokyo, a pattern that usually allows allied forces to track any additional activity in real time. Analysis of the debris and flight path is expected to give a fuller picture of the missile’s capability once recovery work is complete.

Diplomatically, the standoff over the border is likely to dominate. South Korea has demanded an apology and compensation, and with Pyongyang now threatening a permanent severing of inter-Korean ties, the groundwork for further military displays appears to be in place.
