Ukraine says lives are being lost because US has slowed intelligence sharing, Zelensky adviser warns
A senior adviser to Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that Ukrainians are dying because the United States has restricted intelligence sharing, reducing the time available to warn civilians about incoming missile attacks. Serhii Beskrestnov made the stark assessment in an interview with the BBC, suggesting the policy shift is having a direct impact on the ground.
The White House has rejected the claim, stating there have been no changes to the flow of intelligence. But Ukrainian officials have long warned that even brief gaps in early-warning data can cost lives, particularly in cities hit by long-range strikes. The exchange comes at a sensitive moment in the conflict, with Western allies searching for a coherent strategy ahead of winter.
What the restriction means
US intelligence support has underpinned Ukraine’s air-defence network since the full-scale invasion began. Analysts say the system allows commanders to track incoming threats and give residents time to reach shelters. If those data streams have been throttled, Ukrainian defences would have to rely more heavily on domestic sensors and shorter-range radar — a gap that Russian strike planners could exploit.
Why it matters
The UK has positioned itself as one of Kyiv’s closest military backers, and any reduction in American support tests the limits of that coalition. British officials will be watching carefully: a perception that Washington is stepping back could push European capitals to fill the gap, or it could create pressure for a negotiated settlement on terms less favourable to Kyiv.
What happens next
NATO allies are expected to raise the issue at upcoming defence talks. Britain’s Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged continued backing for Ukraine, but the government will face questions about whether that commitment includes intelligence assets. For now, both Washington and Kyiv insist the partnership remains intact, though the public disagreement has exposed fault lines that Russia is certain to exploit in its information campaign.
