Police warn of rising tension and violence among young people in south London

Police have told the BBC that tension and violence among young people is rising in parts of south London, with officers in Lambeth and Southwark warning that some children in the area are highly vulnerable to gang recruitment. The picture described is one in which criminal groups have a growing pool of young people to draw from, and where the line between victim and participant is increasingly blurred.

What police have said

The warning focuses on two of south London’s inner boroughs, both of which have long been under pressure from county line networks and organised drug supply routes. Officers say the concern is not simply the volume of offending, but the age of those involved, with children well below the age of criminal responsibility caught up in the same networks as teenagers and young adults.

Vulnerability, in this context, describes more than exposure to crime. It refers to children who may lack a stable adult presence at home, who may be missing school regularly, or who are being offered money and status in exchange for carrying drugs or using violence.

The recruitment problem

Gangs operating in the area typically identify children early, working through schools, social media and community networks. The pitch is rarely overtly criminal. It is framed as belonging, as status, as money available now rather than later. Once a young person is inside such a network, the pressure to remain grows quickly, and the risk of exploitation rises alongside it.

Why it matters

The issue is national but the response is intensely local. Policing, social services and schools in the affected boroughs carry the burden of identifying vulnerable children early enough to intervene, and they do so with staffing and budget constraints that have been widely criticised.

Public concern about youth violence in areas such as Lambeth and Southwark tends to focus on serious incidents, individual crimes and sentences handed down. The picture police are now painting is about the pipeline that leads to those crimes, and about how many children sit in it.

What happens next

Expect pressure for more youth workers, targeted early intervention in schools, and closer working between police and local authorities on child exploitation in south London boroughs. Whether the warnings translate into additional resources, or simply into more visible enforcement, is the question local communities will be watching.
