Two people have died following what has been described as a workplace incident on the Ballygowan Road in Crossnacreevy, County Down, BBC News NI understands. The incident happened at about 10:45 BST on Friday, and emergency services are in attendance at the scene.
Three ambulances and two hazard response teams were sent to the rural road, but nobody was taken away from the scene. Police have since closed the Ballygowan Road, and motorists have been advised to find another route.
Inspectors on site
Northern Ireland’s Health and Safety Executive said it was aware of an incident at a workplace in the area and that inspectors were on site making enquiries. The regulator said it was “currently liaising with the emergency services and other relevant agencies”.
The involvement of the health and safety regulator is a significant detail. HSENI is the body responsible for enforcing workplace safety standards in Northern Ireland, and its presence indicates that investigators from that side are working alongside the police and ambulance service, rather than the deaths being treated solely as a road traffic matter.
What is known so far
Public details remain limited at this stage. The BBC has not reported the identities of those who died, nor the nature of the workplace or the circumstances in which the incident occurred. Information about what happened is expected to come through the police investigation and the Health and Safety Executive’s enquiries.
The location itself, a rural road on the edge of a small village, is the kind of site where agricultural, construction and small industrial work takes place, though the specific trade involved has not been confirmed. Crossnacreevy sits in the Castlereagh area of County Down, and the road involved serves countryside and farmland to the west of the village.

Why it matters
Two deaths at a single workplace site is a serious loss of life, and the death of workers is treated as a distinct category of fatality in UK safety law precisely because employers owe a heightened duty of care to those on their premises. The eventual findings of the Health and Safety Executive’s investigation will be closely followed by the families affected and by safety campaigners.
For Northern Ireland, the incident also arrives against a background in which workplace safety enforcement has been under sustained public and political scrutiny, with unions and bereaved families regularly highlighting gaps in inspection coverage and enforcement resources.
What happens next
Police and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service will continue work at the scene, and the road closure is expected to remain in place while investigators operate. The Health and Safety Executive has said inspectors are making enquiries, which normally precedes a decision on whether a full investigation will be opened, and a coroner’s inquest will be required before the deaths can be formally recorded.
Expect official identification of those who died, confirmation of the type of workplace involved, and further updates from the police and HSENI over the coming days.
