UK ‘woefully unprepared’ to face wildfires, MPs warn – as UN issues climate target warning

UK prime minister Andy Burnham’s government faces mounting pressure after MPs warned that Britain is “woefully unprepared” to tackle the growing threat of wildfires, as United Nations scientists declared that exceeding a key global climate target is now “imminent and unavoidable”.

A fleet built for runways, not moorland

The environmental audit committee heard evidence that the planes and equipment currently tasked with airport firefighting are not designed for sustained suppression work over heather-clad moorland, forest and farmland — the terrain where UK wildfires now spread fastest. Sky News UK reports that MPs concluded the country needs a dedicated fleet of purpose-built air tankers, along with a tightening of outdoor burning rules that would extend the existing barbecue restrictions onto high-risk moorland as well as urban green spaces.

Why it matters

Britain’s fire and rescue services have historically treated wildfire as a low-probability risk, but the past three summers have seen an escalation in both frequency and scale. A failure to invest now means that a single severe blaze — the kind southern Europe confronts annually — could outstrip the available resources, with knock-on effects on evacuations, air quality in cities such as Manchester and London, and the tourism economy of the Lake District and Snowdonia.

A climate clock that keeps striking midnight

The UN scientists’ warning centres on the 1.5°C warming threshold that global climate pledges were meant to keep below. With atmospheric CO₂ concentrations still climbing and Arctic sea-ice reaching new seasonal lows, the report — delivered as Burns Brighton’s October heat records are reviewed by the Met Office — finds that overshooting the target this decade is now unavoidable even if the UK meets its own net-zero commitments. The gap, the report authors explain, is largely driven by emissions from the world’s largest economies over the past twelve months.

Burnham’s office has not yet responded to the MPs’ specific recommendations on firefighting aircraft, though environment department officials briefed the press that a review of aerial suppression capacity is underway alongside the autumn budget discussions.

What happens next

The committee expects to publish its full report before the Christmas adjournment, with cross-party backing that could force a statement in the Commons before the new year. Fire chiefs say the window to stand up a dedicated wildfire air wing — including crew training and base infrastructure — spans six to twelve months from funding approval, which puts any decision squarely into the first half of 2027. A spokesperson for the prime minister said only that the government “takes all climate and emergency resilience matters seriously” and will consider the recommendations “in due course”.
