Fires prompt national alert as 19 homes destroyed

Britain braced for a weekend of wildfire danger

The prime minister has issued an extraordinary public warning as dozens of fires burn across England and Wales, with emergency crews racing to contain some of the most destructive blazes the country has seen in years. Andy Burnham told the public to take the government’s national alert “seriously”, saying it was triggered at the request of firefighters on the front line.

The Stourbridge devastation

The worst single incident has unfolded in Stourbridge, in the West Midlands, where a fire tore through dry grass and woodland on Thursday before surging into residential streets. Nineteen homes have been destroyed and a further 18 damaged. West Midlands Fire Service chief fire officer Simon Tuhill described it as one of the most significant incidents his service has ever faced.

Families were given minutes to flee. Mike Davis, evacuated with his relatives, recalled “a hell of a scene… thick smoke and something I’ve never seen before.” Jane Baxter, whose garden backs onto a golf course, said police returned within four or five minutes to order them out immediately. The Bishop of Dudley, the Right Reverend Martin Gorick, was among those unable to return home. At the nearby Sugarloaf Equestrian Centre, staff raced to lead horses to safety as the heat became so intense workers “could feel it burning our legs”.

A national alert and a barbecue ban

On Friday evening the government pushed out a national alert warning people against “any activity that could start a fire.” Mr Burnham said 37 fires were currently burning across England and Wales. Alongside the alert, ministers announced a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues, which have been blamed for serious fires this summer.

The danger is not confined to the West Midlands. A major incident was declared near Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, where dozens of homes were evacuated. In Hampshire, crews spent a sixth day tackling a wildfire in the New Forest. Norfolk Fire and Rescue dealt with 16 emergencies in a single afternoon, including a blaze at Mousehold Heath. In Birmingham, fires damaged properties in Warstock and Kings Norton, while in Stoke-on-Trent four homes in Sandyford were lost. Willenhall saw at least three homes and several gardens destroyed.

What it means for UK households

The prime minister, visiting Stourbridge, called the scene “devastating” and warned the country had become a “tinderbox”, with the coming weekend expected to be difficult. Extra support has been promised for emergency services, and arrests have been made elsewhere in connection with suspected arson.

For households, the message is blunt: do not light open fires, disposable barbecues or anything that could ignite tinder-dry vegetation. With temperatures and dryness elevated, a single spark can move from field to front door in minutes – as Stourbridge has shown. Residents are urged to follow local fire service guidance, report plumes of smoke promptly, and check on vulnerable neighbours during what could be a defining few days for UK wildfire preparedness.
