Police investigating threatening ‘hoax’ emails sent to schools

Police in Northern Ireland and Scotland are investigating after threatening emails, deemed to be a hoax, were sent to hundreds of schools across the UK, prompting evacuations and widespread concern among students and parents. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that up to 300 schools reported receiving the same emailed message containing a generalised threat. The emails originated from outside the UK and were quickly identified as non-viable by authorities, though not before causing significant disruption to education. Stormont’s education minister Paul Givan said the threats appeared to originate from individuals claiming Sharia law would be brought into the country, with some messages signed off with “Allah Akbar”. Schools in Northern Ireland closed temporarily as an precaution, with some evacuated entirely before reopening in the afternoon.

Why it matters

While ultimately found to be hoax threats, the incident demonstrates the vulnerability of educational institutions to coordinated intimidation campaigns. The disruption to thousands of pupils’ routines and the psychological impact on staff and parents underscores the need for robust cybersecurity measures in the education sector.

What happens next

Urgent inquiries are ongoing, with police liaising directly with affected schools. The PSNI has confirmed the public risk remains low but continues to assess all intelligence. Similar messages have reportedly been received by some schools across Scotland, though Police Scotland has yet to confirm impact scope.
