UK meat industry hit by cyber-attack which targeted European supermarket freezers

The UK meat industry has been hit by a cyber-attack that also targeted supermarket freezers in Europe, according to BBC Technology, with stores in countries including Ireland, Sweden and Belgium reporting fridges being raised in temperature on Monday.

The BBC says supermarkets reported freezer temperatures being hiked, a tactic that can threaten food safety because gaps in the cold chain can spoil perishable goods. For meat suppliers, a disruption of that kind can mean lost stock, held-up deliveries and extra checks before products reach shop shelves.

Freezers as a target

Retail refrigeration systems are often connected to building management software, which means they can be reached remotely. Attackers who gain access to such systems can be hard to spot quickly, because the equipment appears to be working normally until temperatures drift out of safe range.

For supermarkets, the priority is to protect food safety first and restore systems quickly. For suppliers in the UK meat industry, the concern is whether processors, cold stores and distribution networks are exposed to the same kind of attack.

Why it matters

The incident matters because it connects cyber-security to the physical food supply. A digital intrusion that alters fridge temperatures can end with stock being thrown away, shelves empty and questions about whether affected products were ever safe to sell.

What happens next

The BBC reports that supermarkets in several European countries were affected after fridges were hiked in temperature on Monday. Companies are likely to be reviewing remote access to refrigeration systems, tightening passwords and monitoring temperature alerts so abnormal rises are caught faster in future.
