Train passengers could be overcharged by new pay-as-you-go scheme, council warns

🚨 BREAKING

What happened

Train passengers could be overcharged by new pay-as-you-go scheme, council warns TfW recently launched a social media campaign to promote the payment system's availability to passengers on the 27-mile (44 km) Wrexham-Bidston Borderlands Line. A TikTok advert for the scheme tells viewers it offers passengers TfW's "best value fare".

What we know

But Flintshire council said there had been no explanation that children, families and pensioners, who all qualified for concessionary fares, would be charged full adult price. TfW said it was "actively reviewing" how to communicate alternative ticketing options to customers. The pay-as-you-go scheme allows customers to use a tap-in and tap-out process using a contactless debit card or smartphone device without needing to buy tickets in advance for adult single journeys. Alasdair Ibbotson, a councillor for Penyffordd, first raised the concern that passengers were being overcharged by the system in July. He told a council meeting that signage around stations did not explain that concessionary travel would not be supported. Ibbotson criticised the messaging that pay-as-you-go offers the "best value fares" as it was possible for some passengers to pay less through concessionary travel. "The tap‑and‑go machines can only charge full‑fare adult tickets," he said. "If you are eligible to travel on a child ticket or at a reduced rate because you have a railcard you will not be charged the correct fare for your journey. "You will be overcharged. So the notion that this is the best value fare is categorically untrue.".
