Ex-UK army chef jailed for terror-related offence

A former British Army chef has been sentenced to almost four years in prison for possessing weapons for terrorist purposes, after Sheffield Crown Court heard he stockpiled ammunition, crossbows and homemade explosives while expressing extreme right-wing views in online chat groups.

Mark Broadhurst, 28, received his sentence following a case that began in September 2024 when police raided his home and recovered knives, crossbows, black powder, ammunition, air pistols and what prosecutors described as an improvised homemade cannon. Broadhurst pleaded guilty to firearms and explosives charges but denied the weapons were intended for terrorism. The judge nonetheless determined the offences were connected to terrorism, citing online messages in which he discussed selling homemade firearms to right-wing groups and his membership of a private chat group with three men later jailed for plotting attacks on mosques and synagogues in the north of England.

Online radicalisation networks

Prosecutors said Broadhurst’s case is part of a broader pattern in which the Crown Prosecution Service is handling the highest number of hate-crime referrals in its history. In July this year, twelve people were arrested in connection with an extreme right-wing terror plot targeting an Islamic gathering in eastern England. Security sources say criminal networks are increasingly operating through encrypted channels, sharing technical knowledge on improvised weapons manufacturing and coordinating through online forums that mimic gaming and hobbyist communities. The speed at which radicalisation occurs — sometimes within weeks of initial exposure — has stretched the capacity of counter-terrorism units across England and Wales.

Military background and risk assessment

Broadhurst’s prior service in the Army, where he would have had access to weapons training and understanding of law enforcement tactics, made his case particularly concerning for security officials. Mental-health professionals who assessed him noted the difficulty of distinguishing between lawful gun ownership and preparation for violence when an individual has legitimate military credentials. The case has prompted a review of how the police handle weapons licences for serving or former military personnel who exhibit signs of extremist sympathies.

Why it matters

This sentencing confirms that the threat from extreme right-wing terrorism — once dismissed as fringe — has moved firmly into the centre of British security planning. The judge’s terrorism designation means weapons possession linked to extremist ideology is now prosecuted as terrorism, not merely firearms offending. For communities targeted by far-right rhetoric, the case is a stark reminder that the threat is not abstract but operational and ongoing.

Security service response

MI5 has repeatedly warned that the domestic far-right threat is at its highest level in a decade. The case also illustrates how individuals with prior military or security training present particular challenges for counter-terrorism units, who must balance monitoring with intervention before violence occurs. New protocols for tracking online radicalisation channels are being rolled out across all nine counter-terrorism units.

What happens next

The CPS has indicated that additional prosecutions may follow as related chat groups come under further investigation. Broadhurst’s case also sets a legal precedent for how the system categorises weapons possession linked to extremist ideology, with implications for ongoing inquiries. Parliament is expected to raise questions about whether current sentencing guidelines adequately reflect terrorism designations when no violence has yet been carried out. Source: Al Jazeera.
