A wildfire warning has been issued for Scotland, with the public told to use “extreme caution” as tinder-dry conditions and strong winds raise the risk of fires spreading.
The warning follows a summer of major wildland fires across the UK, where prolonged drought and heat have left moorland and grassland highly flammable. Fire services have repeatedly urged the public not to use disposable barbecues, firepits or fireworks in the countryside.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has previously declared major incidents during severe wildfire periods, and crews have been stretched by simultaneous blazes from Conwy Mountain to Blaenavon. A Welsh Government statement on August 14 updated on wildfire status and military support to assist crews on the ground.
Members of the public are advised to follow local fire-service guidance, avoid activities that could start a fire, and report any outbreaks immediately.
