Fresh wildfire outbreaks across Mid and South Wales have triggered smoke warnings, with residents told to keep doors and windows closed as directional winds carry plumes north-west.
Community safety alerts issued on August 24 warned that ongoing wildfires combined with shifting winds were pushing smoke across parts of the country. Residents, landowners and visitors were urged not to undertake any activity that could start a fire, including disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators or fireworks.
The warnings come amid a sustained wildfire season. The National Fire Chiefs Council said firefighters had responded to 966 wildfires across England and Wales this year, including 185 in the first 10 days of August alone.
Wales has seen significant blazes through the summer, from Conwy Mountain to Blaenavon, stretching fire service resources. A Welsh Government written statement on August 14 updated on wildfire status and military support to assist crews.
