Man arrested after boy, 11, injured in ‘dog attack’ in Manchester

Police have arrested a man after an 11-year-old boy was injured in an incident involving three allegedly out-of-control dogs in Newton Heath, Manchester. The boy received medical treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to Greater Manchester Police.

Dogs seized under Dangerous Dogs Act

The three dogs involved were seized by officers and are being held under the Dangerous Dogs Act while enquiries continue. That legislation covers breeds banned in the UK as well as any dog that is dangerously out of control in a public place. Police have not named the breed of the animals, but witnesses described large dogs running loose near a residential street shortly before the incident.

Neighbours in Newton Heath said the area has seen an increase in dog-related complaints in recent months, a pattern reflected in force-level data across Greater Manchester. Dog control officers are already stretched, and the RSPCA has warned that illegal breeding and the trade in banned breeds are rising in northern cities.

Broader context for dog safety

The incident comes weeks after the government signalled it would review dangerous dogs legislation, with particular attention to how local authorities can seize animals before a serious incident occurs. Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s office has not commented directly on the Newton Heath case, but ministers are aware that public concern about out-of-control dogs crosses party lines and regularly features in constituency postbags.

The man arrested remains in custody for questioning. Charges could include possessing a banned dog, allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control, and — depending on the boy’s injuries — more serious offences under the Offences Against the Person Act.

Why it matters

Dog attacks on children are relatively rare but provoke intense local concern and demand swift action. If the dogs in this case turn out to be banned breeds or previously known to authorities, questions will follow about why they were not removed earlier.

What happens next

The suspect will be interviewed and may be charged within days. The boy’s family will be kept informed as the investigation develops, and local neighbourhood policing teams are likely to increase patrols in Newton Heath while the case is active.
