Two Latvians arrested after breaching perimeter of RAF Molesworth, US air base in UK

Two Latvian men have been arrested after they were found inside the perimeter of RAF Molesworth, the Cambridgeshire air base used by United States forces, counterterrorism police have confirmed. The men were detained before they could reach any operational part of the installation, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Counterterrorism investigation launched

Counterterrorism policing is leading the inquiry, a decision that signals the seriousness with which the authorities treat any unauthorised entry to a military site. Officers are examining whether the men acted alone, whether they had any connection to hostile groups, and how they penetrated what should be a heavily monitored boundary. The base is surrounded by multiple layers of security, including fencing, surveillance cameras, and armed patrols.

The two men appeared before Westminster magistrates on charges connected with trespass on a protected site. Legal representatives have not commented publicly, and the investigation is at an early stage. Police have not disclosed ages or immigration status, saying only that both men are Latvian nationals.

RAF Molesworth’s strategic role

RAF Molesworth is one of several UK bases that host American intelligence and support units. Its location in East Anglia places it close to RAF Alconbury and the joint intelligence facilities that underpin the US-UK special relationship. Any security breach at such a site is automatically elevated beyond a routine police matter because of the sensitivity of the assets and personnel housed there.

The Ministry of Defence said it is reviewing access procedures but declined to say whether the review was triggered specifically by this incident or was already under way. Base commanders routinely stress that physical security is never a single point of failure, but repeated breaches would prompt questions about funding and personnel levels.

Why it matters

An intrusion at a US-UK intelligence hub tests the trust between the two countries and raises questions about whether hostile actors are probing British defences. Even if the two Latvians turn out to have no intelligence background, the fact that they reached the perimeter is an embarrassment for base security and will invite scrutiny from NATO allies.

What happens next

The investigation will focus on forensic evidence, digital activity, and travel records to establish intent. If the men intended to gather intelligence or disrupt operations, they face charges under the Official Secrets Act and anti-terrorism legislation. The MoD will also conduct an internal security audit, the results of which may be withheld from public view.
