Gales and heavy rain to impact UK as yellow wind warning issued

A yellow wind warning has been issued for north-west Scotland as gales and heavy rain sweep across parts of the UK on Wednesday, with gusts of up to 70mph possible in the Highlands and Islands.

Met Office alert

The Met Office confirmed that the warning covers the western coastal regions and the Hebridean islands, where strong westerly winds are expected to persist from the mid-afternoon onwards. The warning runs from midday until 10pm, with the strongest gusts likely around the western headlands.

Travel disruption expected

Transport Scotland has advised drivers to take extra care on exposed routes, particularly the A82 between Glasgow and Fort William, where falling trees and flying debris have been reported during similar weather events earlier this year.

Ferry services between the mainland and the outer Hebrides have already been placed on standby, with CalMac confirming that cancellations are likely if sustained winds exceed 60mph. Passengers are urged to check for updates before travelling.

Why it matters

Although the warning is classified as yellow—the least severe tier—the combination of high winds and persistent rain raises the risk of localized flooding, particularly in areas still recovering from saturated ground conditions following last week’s rainfall.

The Met Office has indicated that the storm system is part of a broader Atlantic depression moving eastward across the northern UK, and that further weather warnings for rain may be issued later in the week as the system tracks towards Scandinavia.

What happens next

Overnight into Thursday, the system is expected to clear the northern Highlands, with conditions gradually improving from west to east. However, the Environment Agency has warned that river levels on the River Findhorn and the River Spey remain elevated, and additional flood alerts could be triggered if rainfall totals exceed 40mm in the mountainous areas.

Gardeners and householders are advised to secure outdoor furniture and loose objects ahead of the evening rush hour, when the strongest gusts are forecast to arrive across Scotland’s central belt.
