Swimmer Archie Goodburn thanks prime minister as brain cancer review announced

A tearful plea from Scottish swimmer Archie Goodburn for better brain cancer treatment has secured a national review of NHS care, after the athlete met Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Downing Street following his televised appeal for research investment.

Goodburn, 25, of Edinburgh, was diagnosed with three large oligodendroglioma brain tumours after experiencing numbness and seizures during training for the 2024 Olympic trials. Despite reaching the final of the 50m breaststroke at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he was forced to step away from competition and, in a BBC interview earlier this month, described watching other athletes compete while knowing his own racing career may be over. His appeal — aired across the BBC’s breakfast programming — prompted an immediate meeting with Burnham, who announced a new national brain cancer clinical lead and committed to a comprehensive review of progress in the sector since 2018.

NHS treatment gaps

The review will be overseen by Professor Anthony Chalmers of the University of Glasgow, whose remit includes identifying what continues to hold back progress and recommending measures to accelerate new treatments from laboratories to patients. Goodburn previously told BBC Breakfast that clinical trials available around the world were not being accessed by UK patients, describing the situation as “unfair and unjust.” Five-year survival for brain cancer in the UK hovers around 15%, among the lowest of all cancer types, and advocates say the gap between research breakthroughs and NHS delivery has widened over the past decade.

The government has also asked the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to fast-track its review of rules governing treatments for rare conditions, compressing a three-year timeline into two. Patients, families and charities will be invited to help design a new drive to increase clinical-trial participation, with regional centres across England, Scotland and Wales expected to join the expanded network.

Why it matters

Brain cancer survival rates in the UK remain among the lowest of all cancer types, and the delay between research breakthroughs and patient access has left thousands of families facing a prognosis that would be markedly different in other developed nations. Goodburn’s advocacy — born from personal tragedy but amplified by his platform as a competitive athlete — has shone a public light on systemic failures in how the NHS commissions and delivers treatment for rare diseases. The review represents a potential turning point for an estimated 13,000 families diagnosed with brain tumours annually.

What happens next

Professor Chalmers’ review findings are expected to feed into a national cancer plan that will set out new targets for getting experimental treatments to patients. The MHRA’s accelerated review will conclude in two years, after which rule changes could unlock new drug approvals for conditions currently deemed too niche for commercial development. Goodburn’s own treatment continues; he has said he is grateful for the promises made but will be watching closely to ensure they are “fleshed out” into concrete action. Source: BBC News.
