Blocked roads and devastation as BBC drives to site of Nepal floods

Rescue teams are struggling to reach communities along the Nepal–Tibet border as blocked roads and landslides leave entire valleys cut off, the BBC’s South Asia correspondent Azadeh Moshiri has reported after travelling from Kathmandu towards Trishuli. Her route passed a steady procession of ambulances and hearses heading in the opposite direction, a stark sign of the scale of a disaster that has left a number of British travellers unaccounted for.

The road to Trishuli

Moshiri’s account describes a journey slowed by damage to the transport network, with vehicles unable to pass in places and emergency traffic dominating the narrow mountain roads. The Trishuli area sits on a key route through the central Himalayas, and its isolation has complicated the effort to deliver aid and locate those reported missing after flash floods swept through border regions earlier this week.

The presence of hearses and ambulances on the same road underscores how the crisis has moved beyond a search-and-rescue operation into the recovery of victims. Local officials, aid agencies and visiting journalists have all reported similar scenes across the affected districts.

British nationals among the missing

The Foreign Office has said it is supporting the families of UK travellers caught up in the disaster. Earlier this week the tourist board confirmed that 33 British nationals were among those unaccounted for following the floods, and consular staff in the region have been assisting with tracing efforts. The government in London has urged anyone with relatives in the area to make contact through official channels.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the UK stood ready to provide further assistance, and the Foreign Office has published updated travel guidance for the region. British consular teams are working alongside local authorities and international aid groups to establish the whereabouts of those still missing.

Why it matters

The disaster has become one of the deadliest flood events to hit the Nepal–Tibet border in recent years, and the involvement of foreign nationals — including dozens of British citizens — raises the diplomatic stakes for the Prime Minister’s government. Beyond the immediate human toll, the destruction of roads and bridges threatens to cut off mountain communities for weeks, raising the risk of shortages of medicine and food.

What happens next

Search operations are expected to continue as weather permits, although further rain could hamper access to the most isolated valleys. The Foreign Office is likely to keep its travel warning in place and maintain consular support for affected families. A fuller picture of the number of British casualties is expected as tracing work progresses and as the BBC and other outlets report from the ground in the coming days.
