India’s young put their bodies on the line to be heard in protests against Modi

Young Indians are scaling barricades, enduring detention, and describing themselves as ready to suffer physical pain to keep their protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in the public eye. The demonstrations, concentrated in university towns and major cities, have drawn thousands of students and early-career professionals who say they want jobs, fair examinations, and an end to what they describe as state pressure on dissent.

The symbolism of the ‘cockroach’ insult

A flashpoint for the current wave came when a government official referred to student protesters as cockroaches during a televised interview. The remark, widely circulated on social media, transformed a dispute over university recruitment policies into a broader confrontation about dignity and democratic rights. Neha Bora, one of the organisers, told supporters that the insult crystallised why the protests could not be contained by police batons alone.

Police have responded with mass detentions at marches across Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. Human rights monitors say the number of students held in temporary custody without charge is rising and that several have reported mistreatment. The government’s position is that unlawful assembly must be dispersed to maintain order, and that individual officers are subject to disciplinary procedures if misconduct is proved.

Economic anxiety fuels anger

Beneath the slogans, the protests are driven by economic anxiety. Youth unemployment in India remains stubbornly high even as the government publishes headline growth figures that please international investors. Graduates describe a mismatch between the skills they acquire and the jobs available, while small businesses complain that tax policy favours large conglomerates. The Modi government has introduced new apprenticeship schemes, but students say they are too limited and too closely controlled by political patronage.

The international dimension is muted but present. British universities with large Indian student enrolments are watching the unrest closely because any prolonged instability could affect recruitment and research partnerships. The Foreign Office has not issued a travel warning, but consular staff are monitoring arrests of dual nationals.

Why it matters

Student movements have historically forced political change in India, from the anti-Emergency protests of the 1970s to the anti-corruption movement a decade ago. If this wave sustains its momentum, it could reshape the political calculations of parties ahead of the next general election, especially in states where Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party needs coalition partners.

What happens next

Police are expected to continue using barricades and preventive detention during university convocation season. Student leaders say they will shift tactics, using social media and solidarity strikes rather than mass street confrontations. The government may offer a diluted policy concession, but organisers have so far rejected anything short of a formal apology for the cockroach remark.
